Privacy policy

The short version: this site doesn't use cookies or ads. It counts visits with Umami, a privacy-friendly stats tool that doesn't identify you. If you use the AI chat, what you type goes to Anthropic to write the replies, and I don't save chats. If you send me a message, I use it only to reply to you and to work with you. I never sell your information.

Who runs this site

This website is run by Jay Johnson, doing business as Jay Johnson AI, in Northern Virginia, USA. "I" and "me" in this policy mean Jay Johnson AI.

What I collect

• What you send me. When you use the contact form, you give me your name, your email address, your business name (if you add it), what you need help with and your message.
• Basic technical details. Like almost every website, the services that run this one (listed below) automatically receive standard details when your browser loads a page, such as your IP address, your browser type and the page you asked for. I don't use these details to identify you.
• Visit statistics. I use Umami to count visits and see how people use the site: the pages you view and the buttons you tap, when you visit, the website or link that brought you here (like the link on my business card), your rough location (city, region and country), your language, and your type of device, browser and screen. Umami doesn't use cookies and doesn't store your IP address or anything else that identifies you. It tells visits apart with an anonymous code, so I can see how many people visited but not who they were.
• Chats with the AI assistant. If you use the "Ask my AI" chat, what you type is sent to Anthropic to write the replies. I don't save chats. More about the chat.
• Your light or dark choice. If you use the sun and moon button, your browser remembers your choice for that visit only. It stays on your device, it isn't a cookie, and it's cleared when you close the tab.

This site doesn't use cookies, advertising or tracking pixels.

The AI chat assistant

The "Ask my AI" chat on this site is an AI assistant, not a person. When you use it:

• What you type, along with the conversation so far, is sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI, to write the replies. Anthropic keeps it for up to 30 days (longer only if it's flagged for breaking Anthropic's usage rules) and doesn't use it to train its AI.
• I don't save chats. Your browser keeps the conversation until you close the tab, so it carries over between pages on this site.
• Please don't type sensitive personal information into the chat.
• If you use "Talk to Jay" in the chat, your name, email and message come to me the same way a contact form message does. They go straight to me, not to the AI.
• My visit statistics count when the chat is opened and used, never what you type.

How I use your information

• To read and reply to your message.
• To talk with you about the work you asked about, and to keep a record of our conversation.
• Visit statistics: to see which pages and buttons are useful, so I can improve the site.
• The AI chat: to answer the questions you type into it.

I don't sell or rent your information, and I won't add you to a mailing list unless you ask me to.

Who else handles it

I use a few trusted services to run this site. They handle your information only to provide their service to me:

• Netlify hosts this website and stores contact form messages. Netlify checks each message for spam using Akismet, a spam-filtering service run by Automattic. See Netlify's privacy statement.
• Anthropic writes the AI chat assistant's replies, as described above. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
• Umami (Umami Software, Inc.) counts visits for me, as described above. It doesn't use cookies, and it doesn't sell the information. See Umami's privacy policy.
• My email provider receives a copy of each contact form message so I can reply to you.

I may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect my rights or the safety of others.

How long I keep it

I keep messages for as long as I need them to work with you and for my business records. You can ask me to delete yours at any time. Visit statistics are kept for 6 months. I don't save chats with the AI assistant.

Your choices

You can ask to see, correct or delete the information you've sent me. Email jay@jayjohnsonai.com or send a message through the contact form and tell me what you'd like, and I'll take care of it.

To keep your visits out of my visit statistics, turn on Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track in your browser's settings.

How this site responds to Do Not Track signals

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, this site doesn't load its visit statistics, so your visit isn't counted. This site doesn't track you across other websites, and no other company is allowed to track you across websites through this site.

Children

This site is for businesses and isn't meant for children under 13. I don't knowingly collect information from children.

Keeping your information safe

This site uses a secure connection (HTTPS), and I use reputable services to run it. No website can promise perfect security, but I take reasonable steps to protect what you send me.

Changes to this policy

If I change this policy, I'll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
